Doctorate of Philosophy in Plant Molecular Biology. Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions Group, University College Dublin, Ireland.
2001 – 2004
Upper second class Bachelor of Science (with Honours) in Applied Microbiology. Life Sciences Department, Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom.
Diploma of Professional Skills with Distinction. Rothamsted Research, Higham, United Kingdom.

Research Experience
Jan 2005 – June 2009
Characterisation of a novel mycotoxin-responsive wheat gene (PhD research under the supervision of Dr Fiona Doohan). My research led to the very first account of a wheat gene directly undermining the negative effects of a Fusarium virulence factor. A patent for this gene is currently being filed.
Techniques: real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), rapid amplification of cDNA ends, molecular cloning, transient and constitutive heterologous transformation (A. tumefasciens mediated and biolistics), wide field and confocal fluorescent microscopy, in-vitro protein expression and purification, virus-induced gene silencing, and bioinformatics.
Sept. 2003 – Jun. 2004
Abutilon mosaic virus detection in A. striatum (BSc project under the supervision of Dr Susan Smith). Development of a fast and sensitive PCR assay for the detection of the viral coat protein. Techniques used: PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis.
Aug. 2002 – Aug. 2003
Characterisation of sugar beet libraries enriched for ESTs from genes that are differentially expressed during infection by the obligate root parasite, Polymyxa (BSc placement under the direction of Dr Mike Asher). We identified several transcripts potentially involved in non-host response including uncharacterised proteins. Techniques used: northern, Southern and western blots, real-time PCR, molecular cloning and bioinformatics.
April 2001 – Aug. 2001
Influence of arginine on the acid tolerance of L. lactis (DUT placement under the supervision of Pr. Seamus Condon). Techniques used: microbial growth in fermenters, quantification and enzyme activity assays.
