New Video: Horii Etsuji Shihan in Sanda (Kobe)
Horii Etsuji Shihan is a Japanese Aikido teacher who presently holds the rank of 7th Dan Aikikai. He is also a former uchi-deshi of the Aikikai Hombu Dojo under the direction of Ueshiba Kisshomaru Doshu. Horii Shihan is the contemporary of Kobayashi Yukimitsu Shihan and Sugawara Shigeru Shihan. Unlike those, he has chosen to move away from teaching at the Hombu Dojo in order to settle back in his home region and open his own full-time dojo in the city of Sanda (Hyogo Prefecture near Kobe).
I met Horii Sensei for the first time during an annual course that he jointly teaches with Miyamoto Tsuruzo Shihan in Sanda. I was very glad to meet this very affable man and I enjoyed his clean and powerful Aikido. I subsequently accompanied Miyamoto Shihan every year to that event and I gradually got to know Horii Sensei a little better.
Dinner in Sanda with Horii Etsuji Shihan
I suggested to Horii Sensei to visit him last summer to do a video interview and I was delighted that he very quickly accepted. I was on the train to Sanda on the following month. The journey has not been easy due to a powerful typhoon flooding the region the day before but we managed to get some nice footage of the class and the region.
