"New budo, that is, Divine budo" - A short presentation of Ueshiba Morihei in Shin Budo

I have been searching through old issues of the defunct Shin Budo magazine for the past year or so and thanks to the help of Baptiste Tavernier, I was able to lay my eyes on this interesting presentation of Ueshiba Morihei entitled "New budo, that is, Divine budo" (新武道即ち神武道), which was published in the June 1941 issue.

Though brief, it provides evidence that O Sensei, though mostly retired from the day-to-day affairs of the dojoUeshiba Morihei retired from Tokyo, to a farming life in Iwama shortly after., still welcomed some publicity. Indeed, I recently presented another article published at the same period, in the same journal, where Ueshiba presented battlefield techniques. The scan of the original in Japanese is available to my supporters on Patreon.

"A new budo is a divine budo"

Person: Mr Ueshiba Moritaka

Place: Kobukan Aiki-budo Dojo

This dojo is not intended for many people. It’s a dojo for myself.Considering the information in the article, one must assume that O Sensei is referring to the Tokyo dojo, the Kobukan.

The teacher tells the story of budo while stroking his white mustache.

A new budo must bear the spirit of the gods, it must be a divine budoUeshiba uses the contraction of the terms kami (神) and budo (武道) to form kami-budo (神武道)..

After being told the story, I was guided to the dojo to look at the practice. Indeed, no matter how old you are, a 1.80 m tall young man or a judo black belt, you will be thrown by this sixty years-old teacher. I was amazed at the refinement of these divine techniques, which make the most of the reversal of power.
